Türkiye’s Dish Lahmacun Gains EU Protected Status
(MENAFN) Türkiye’s renowned Gaziantep specialty, lahmacun, has officially been recognized by the European Union (EU) as a protected geographical indication (PGI).
Mayor Fatma Sahin announced on Wednesday that this marks the fifth product from the city to receive such a designation.
With this newest recognition, the southeastern city of Gaziantep now has 107 products acknowledged with geographical indications, making it the Turkish city with the largest number of EU-recognized items.
Lahmacun, often described as “Turkish pizza,” is a thin flatbread topped with seasoned meat.
Mayor Sahin noted that this EU acknowledgment follows the registration of other regional specialties including Gaziantep baklava, Araban garlic, menengic coffee, and Antep pistachio paste.
“These registrations preserve the authenticity of our traditional flavors while showcasing our brand value on the global stage and adding economic value to our city,” Sahin emphasized.
She also extended her thanks to Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli, Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacir, the Gaziantep Commodity Exchange, and everyone who played a role in achieving this milestone.
