(MENAFN) Early Wednesday morning, New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani reaffirmed his primary commitment to ensuring that America’s largest metropolis remains within reach for its residents.

In fulfilling this mission, he expressed hope that the city would serve as a national example for fellow Democrats seeking to defeat President Donald Trump in upcoming elections.

Mamdani extended good wishes to his chief rival, independent and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, as Cuomo returns to private life.

However, Mamdani emphasized, "Let tonight be the final time I utter his name as we turn the page on a politics that abandons the many, and answers only to the few."

Poised to become the city’s first Muslim mayor following a decisive victory, Mamdani spent minimal time discussing his main adversary. Instead, he concentrated on motivating his supporters to unite behind his progressive vision as he prepares to move into Gracie Mansion this January—at a time when Trump continues to dominate the national political conversation.

"We will usher in a generation of change, and if we embrace this brave new course, rather than fleeing from it, we can respond to oligarchy and authoritarianism with the strength it fears, not the appeasement it craves. After all, if anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him," Mamdani proclaimed to thunderous applause from the crowd gathered at the Paramount Theater in Brooklyn.

He continued with a pointed message aimed directly at the former president: "If there is any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power. This is not only how we stop Trump, it's how we stop the next one. So Donald Trump, since I know you're watching, I have four words for you: 'Turn the volume up'," he declared, as the audience erupted in cheers.
