UN Satellite Data Shows 81 Percent of Gaza Structures Obliterated

(MENAFN) The United Nations revealed Monday that satellite imagery confirms nearly 81% of all buildings across the Gaza Strip have sustained damage, underscoring the catastrophic toll of over two years of Israeli military operations as aid organizations struggle to meet overwhelming humanitarian demands.

UN spokesperson Farhan Haq, referencing data from the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), addressed reporters with stark figures detailing the unprecedented destruction while acknowledging modest progress in relief efforts.

"The ongoing scale-up of the aid response is already having a positive impact on people in all areas of the strip. But much more is needed so that we can address the full scale of the needs and leave no one behind," Haq stated during the briefing.

The UN Satellite Center's latest assessment paints a grim picture of structural devastation throughout the territory. Analysis shows "some 81% of all structures in the Gaza Strip are damaged," Haq confirmed, with northern regions bearing the brunt of recent escalations.

Since July 2025, northern Gaza witnessed the most dramatic surge in destruction, with "nearly 5,700 newly affected structures," according to Haq's remarks. Territory-wide, the assessment identified "more than 123,000 structures across the strip have been identified as destroyed, another 50,000 are severely or moderately damaged, and 24,000 are possibly damaged."

Educational facilities are slowly resuming operations despite the devastation. Haq noted that renovation efforts "is ongoing in four schools," while humanitarian teams "have supported the reopening of five temporary learning spaces in Gaza City" within the last 72 hours, according to UN and partner organizations.

Israeli attacks have claimed more than 68,000 Palestinian lives since hostilities erupted in October 2023, spanning over two years of continuous military operations.

A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas took effect October 10, built upon a 20-point peace framework presented by US President Donald Trump. However, Israel has repeatedly breached the truce terms on multiple occasions.
