Tanzania's President Takes Oath After Deadly Protests
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
RABAT, Nov 3 (KUNA) -- Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu was sworn in Monday during a limited official ceremony in the administrative capital Dodoma, following a controversial election marked by protests and violence.
Local media reported that the inauguration took place under tight security, as several cities continue to witness unrest after the opposition rejected the results of the October 29 elections.
According to the UN Human Rights Office, at least ten people were killed in the cities of Dar es Salaam, Shinyanga, and Morogoro. The government has postponed reopening universities, originally set for November 3, due to the security situation.
The ceremony was attended by the presidents of Mozambique, Zambia, Burundi, and Somalia, while Kenyan President William Ruto urged in an official statement for national dialogue and calm to ensure stability.
The recent violence also led to the closure of the Namanga border crossing between Tanzania and Kenya, halting agricultural truck traffic for six days. (end)
