Bangladesh, Pakistan Revive Top-Tier Economic Talks
(MENAFN) After nearly two decades, the Bangladesh-Pakistan Joint Economic Commission (JEC) reconvened on Monday in Dhaka, marking the revival of top-tier bilateral economic discussions.
The two-day session, the premier forum for economic cooperation between the neighboring nations, centered on enhancing collaboration across sectors including agriculture, information technology, food security, aviation, and shipping.
Both delegations highlighted the need to reduce non-tariff barriers and explore new areas of partnership such as education, manpower exports, and industrial development.
The Bangladeshi delegation was led by Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed, while Pakistan’s team was headed by Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik. Officials emphasized the importance of rejuvenating broader regional engagement through the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).
Current bilateral trade remains below one billion U.S. dollars, a level both sides regard as modest and ripe for growth.
Relations between the two countries improved significantly in 2024 following the formation of Bangladesh’s interim government, marked by a shift in diplomatic tone and the launch of joint cooperative initiatives.
