France witnesses another museum heist

(MENAFN) A day after a high-profile jewelry theft at the Louvre, another French museum has fallen victim to a major break-in, Franceinfo reported on Wednesday. Thieves stole nearly 2,000 gold and silver coins from the Denis Diderot House of Enlightenment in the northeastern town of Langres.

Museum staff discovered the theft on Monday morning, finding a broken front door and a smashed display case. The stolen collection included 1,633 silver and 319 gold coins from the 18th and 19th centuries, valued at roughly €90,000 ($104,000). The coins were part of a “treasure” unearthed during construction work in 2011.

Local officials said the break-in appeared carefully planned, with thieves taking only select valuables while leaving other items untouched. The museum has since closed, and private guards have been hired to secure the premises as the security system undergoes upgrades.

The Langres theft is the third major museum robbery in France this month. On October 16, gold nuggets worth €1.5 million or $1.7 million were stolen from the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, and on October 19, eight pieces of Napoleonic-era jewelry were taken in a daylight heist at the Louvre.

The string of thefts has sparked a political backlash over museum security. Opposition figures accused the government of neglecting cultural heritage protection. Far-right politician Marion Maréchal called France the “laughingstock of the world” and demanded the resignation of Louvre Director Laurence Des Cars, criticizing her for allegedly prioritizing diversity over security expertise.

Jordan Bardella, leader of the National Rally, condemned the Louvre robbery as an “intolerable humiliation,” saying it symbolized “the decay of the state.”

Authorities have yet to confirm whether the recent thefts are connected.
