Trump Denies Assistance in Ukraine’s Use of Tomahawks
(MENAFN) President Donald Trump has stated that the United States will not assist Ukraine in launching long-range Tomahawk missiles against Russian forces.
He emphasized that training Ukrainian troops to operate these advanced weapons would require several months of extensive preparation.
During a discussion at the White House on Wednesday with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Trump refrained from confirming whether the US might eventually supply Kiev with the missiles, which can reach targets up to approximately 2,500 kilometers (1,550 miles) away.
However, he underscored that mastering the Tomahawk missile system demands prolonged and rigorous training.
“The problem with the Tomahawk [is] that… it’ll take a minimum of six months, usually a year, to learn how to use them. They’re highly complex,” Trump explained.
“So the only way a Tomahawk is going to be shot is if we shot it, and we’re not going to do that.”
Trump further added, “We know how to use it, and we’re not going to be teaching other people.”
He previously warned that permitting Ukraine to carry out long-range strikes deep inside Russian territory might trigger “an escalation.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin has cautioned against supplying Ukraine with such long-range weaponry, stating it would be “impossible to use Tomahawks without the direct participation of American military personnel.”
Putin also argued that providing these missiles would “severely undermine the prospects of a peaceful settlement” and harm diplomatic ties between Moscow and Washington.
