Future of Life Institute Calls for Ban on ASI Research
(MENAFN) The Future of Life Institute has called for an immediate ban on all research involving Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) until experts reach a firm scientific consensus on its safety and controllability, media reports.
In a letter released Wednesday, the US-based nonprofit warned of the profound risks posed by AI systems that could eventually exceed human intelligence in every aspect.
While recognizing that advanced AI technologies have the potential to improve health and well-being, the organization stressed that ASI might one day become a serious threat to humanity.
Artificial Superintelligence, or ASI, describes a theoretical AI capable of outperforming humans in all cognitive tasks, including creativity, problem-solving, and decision-making.
The letter declared: “We call for a prohibition on the development of superintelligence, not lifted before there is broad scientific consensus that it will be done safely and controllably, and strong public buy-in.”
This urgent appeal was signed by 865 notable figures from diverse fields—Nobel laureates, artists, politicians, business leaders, and even members of the British royal family. Among them are Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex; his wife Meghan Markle; Nobel laureate and AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton; Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak; former Irish President Mary Robinson; comedian Stephen Fry; and actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Established in 2014, the Future of Life Institute champions the safe, ethical development of AI technologies. The organization garnered worldwide attention last year after calling for a temporary pause in training cutting-edge AI systems like GPT-4.
