Türkiye Emerges as Europe’s Top Steel Producer

(MENAFN) Türkiye has ascended to become Europe’s leading steel manufacturer and the seventh-largest worldwide as of August, having produced 36.9 million tons of steel last year, according to a representative from the industry.

Veysel Yayan, secretary-general of the Türkiye Steel Producers’ Association (TCUD), told a news agency that steel remains an essential raw material for the global economy due to its extensive use in sectors such as construction, automotive, energy, and machinery.

He emphasized that its strength, recyclability, and versatile applications make it a crucial component for industrial development.

Steel manufacturing serves not only as an indicator of a nation’s industrialization but also as a symbol of economic strength, underlining its significance in renewable energy initiatives and infrastructure development projects.

Data from the World Steel Association reveals that China led worldwide crude steel production last year with 1 billion tons. India followed with 149 million tons, Japan with 84 million tons, and the United States with 79.5 million tons.

Other leading producers included Russia with 71 million tons, South Korea at 63.6 million, Türkiye producing 39.6 million, Germany with 37.2 million, Brazil at 33.8 million, and Iran with 31.4 million tons.

Regarding Türkiye, Yayan pointed out that the Turkish steel industry exports to a broad spectrum of countries across the world.

He highlighted the sector’s significant role within the global supply chain, reaching over 180 nations.

“Türkiye was the world's eighth largest and Europe's seventh largest steel producer last year, but it has climbed the ranks to seventh largest worldwide and the largest in Europe in the first eight months of 2025,” Yayan explained.

“Our adaptable and resilient production, structural integrity, quality, and prompt delivery distinguish us from other countries' steel sectors, enabling us to maintain continuous production even during economic downturns and global crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.”
