Michael Liemohn is a professor in the Department of Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering at the University of Michigan. His primary research interest is space environment around Earth and other planets in our solar system. The main emphasis of his work is on quantifying the motion of electrically charged particles through the magnetic and electric fields in outer space. This effort includes the development and application of physics-based computer models used in conjunction with extensive data analysis.

He is currently the President-Elect of the Space Physics and Aeronomy section of the American Geophysical Union. He has served as the chair of the NASA Heliophysics Advisory Committee and served on the NASA Science Committee, groups that provide input and recommendations on the strategic directions of NASA's science portfolio. He was the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Geophysical Research - Space Physics, the premier archival journal in his discipline. He is the sole author of a data analysis textbook and lead editor of another book compiling chapters from a journal special collection. He is author of over 240 peer-reviewed journal articles and has led over 50 competitively-selected grant projects.

At Michigan, he has taught 19 different courses, ranging from introductory science classes for non-majors up through graduate-level advanced mathematical classes. Most recently, he has taught courses on Space Policy and Management, Data Analysis for Geoscientists, Graduate Professional Development Seminar, and Advanced Fluid Dynamics. He has several PhD students, works with Master's of Engineering teams on design projects, and regularly works with undergraduates on directed research projects. He is a Faculty Associate Director of the U-M ADVANCE program, an office dedicated to faculty success. He was the founding director of the U-M Space Institute, a campus-wide integrator of "all things space" focused on enhancing the educational and research experiences and collaborations.
