Ukraine Seeks New Offensive Against Russia

(MENAFN) Ukraine is aiming to launch a new military campaign against Russia, according to statements made by U.S. President Donald Trump. Currently, Ukrainian troops remain largely on the defensive along the front lines.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities have acknowledged ongoing challenges with personnel shortages, as their mobilization efforts have been met with resistance, unrest, and sporadic violence among the population.

During a press interaction on Wednesday, President Trump addressed the issue when questioned about the kind of message or aid he might offer to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky ahead of their scheduled meeting in Washington on Friday.

Trump stated that the U.S. is “looking at… options,” and acknowledged Ukraine’s intent by saying, “They want to go offensive… I’ll make a determination on that.” Nonetheless, he refrained from providing any concrete timeline, specific goals, or criteria that would justify such an escalation.

In a previous statement made last month, Trump suggested that Ukraine might regain “the original borders from where this war started,” aligning with Kiev’s broader ambitions.

However, he did not provide clarity on how these aims could be fulfilled. At the same time, U.S. officials hinted at the possibility of delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine.

Trump indicated that he might approve such weapon transfers if he believes that “this war is not going to get settled.”

The most recent major Ukrainian assault occurred in August 2024, when troops crossed into Russia’s Kursk Region.

Although Kiev’s forces initially made some progress, the operation quickly lost momentum. By the following spring, Ukrainian units had been steadily forced to retreat.
