EU Pushes for Kyiv’s Authority Over Ukraine Peace Negotiations

(MENAFN) The European Union on Wednesday firmly stated that any peace negotiations regarding the Ukraine conflict must be led by Kyiv itself.

"Our position is clear. We support all efforts towards peace, and what we have seen throughout is that Ukraine wants peace. Europe wants peace. US wants peace," European Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper declared during a Brussels press briefing.

She further welcomed the initiative of then-US President Donald Trump to pursue peace, saying, "This is why we're welcoming the initiative of President Trump to achieve, finally, this goal."

Despite plans for a summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin set to take place in Budapest within two weeks, the White House confirmed that no meeting is scheduled imminently. The decision for the potential summit was made during a phone call between the two leaders on October 16.

While Russia insists that addressing the root causes of the Ukraine conflict should precede any ceasefire, European officials argue that negotiations must start from the current frontlines. Trump has also supported the concept of halting fighting along the existing contact line.

Hipper accused Moscow of persisting with "the language of war," reaffirming the EU’s commitment to support Ukraine both financially and militarily.

"We can make sure that Ukraine remains strong during and after and before any ceasefire," she emphasized, noting that the bloc is preparing its 19th sanctions package against Russia this week.

On the negotiation process, she stressed, "When it comes to the negotiations, it is for Ukraine to decide, and we're fully supporting Ukraine and President Zelenskyy in this call."

Hipper also outlined intensified EU efforts to combat Russia’s "shadow fleet," a network of oil tankers used to evade Western sanctions.

She explained, "We have also appointed a coordinator in this regard to support us throughout," adding that the EU is "looking into best practices" while coordinating with member states and international partners, including the G7 Task Force, to enhance monitoring and enforcement.

The so-called "shadow fleet" reportedly enables Russia to sidestep international sanctions and sustain its global oil sales amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
