Chinese-Indian direct flights get resumed after five years

(MENAFN) China and India are set to resume direct passenger flights for the first time in five years, marking a step toward improved ties between the two Asian powers.

According to reports, China Eastern Airlines will relaunch its direct service between Shanghai and New Delhi on October 9, ending a long hiatus that began during the coronavirus pandemic.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs had earlier confirmed that air links between the two nations would resume “after nearly five years.”

In a related move, IndiGo, India’s largest airline, announced plans to operate daily direct flights connecting Kolkata and Guangzhou, expanding travel options between the neighboring countries.

The restoration of air connectivity comes as New Delhi and Beijing continue efforts to stabilize bilateral relations following a sharp deterioration in 2020, when violent clashes along the disputed border in Jammu and Kashmir claimed the lives of 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers.
