Hungary, Russia Coordinate for Putin-Trump Summit

(MENAFN) Hungary and Russia have initiated discussions to organize the upcoming summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, according to Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

In a Facebook update on Friday, Szijjarto revealed that he had a phone conversation with Putin’s top foreign policy advisor, Yury Ushakov, confirming that “preparations are in full swing.”

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban also disclosed that he and Putin spoke by phone on Friday.

Additionally, Szijjarto mentioned that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio are scheduled to engage in talks later that day.

Szijjarto emphasized that Hungary is ready to provide security for the Russia-US discussions, which are expected to center around the conflict in Ukraine.

He assured that Budapest would warmly welcome Putin and guarantee his smooth and unrestricted travel to and from Hungary.

On Thursday, Orban expressed Hungary’s willingness to host the summit between the Russian and US presidents, calling the news “great news for the peace-loving people of the world” and portraying Hungary as an “island of peace.”

The planned meeting between Trump and Putin was initially announced by the US president on Thursday, following their first telephone conversation in nearly two months.

The call lasted over two hours, according to statements from both the Kremlin and the White House. Trump described the discussion as “very productive” and remarked that “great progress was made.”
