China Condemns UK Sanctions Over Russia Ties
(MENAFN) China has issued "stern representations" to the United Kingdom in response to sanctions imposed on 11 Chinese companies accused of aiding Russia's energy and defense industries, according to state media on Thursday.
A representative from the Chinese Embassy in the UK stated on Wednesday that "China firmly opposes these sanctions" and called on London to "immediately" withdraw them.
The embassy criticized the UK's move, describing it as an unjustified act that breaches international norms.
The UK government announced on Wednesday a new round of sanctions targeting both Russian and Chinese firms.
This decision is part of London’s broader strategy to escalate pressure on Moscow in light of its ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
British Treasury head Rachel Reeves characterized the measure as a "targeted" initiative focused on companies in India and China that continue to assist in distributing Russian oil throughout global markets.
Beijing denounced the sanctions, labeling them as unilateral and lacking legal grounds under international law.
According to the embassy spokesperson, these actions threaten the lawful rights and business interests of Chinese firms.
In reference to the war in Ukraine, the spokesperson emphasized that China maintains an "objective and impartial position," has consistently supported diplomatic resolutions, and strictly controls the export of dual-use goods in line with relevant laws and policies.
The embassy further stated that regular business interactions between Chinese and Russian companies should not be obstructed. It firmly opposed any efforts at "blame-shifting or smearing" and reiterated that China rejects external interference in its commercial affairs.
