US wants Japan to stop importing from Russia energy
(MENAFN) US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated on Wednesday that he communicated to Japanese Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato the Trump administration’s expectation that Japan cease importing energy from Russia.
"Minister Kato and I also discussed important issues pertaining to the U.S.-Japan economic relationship and the Administration's expectation that Japan stop importing Russian energy," Bessent wrote on the US social media platform X.
The comments followed a private meeting between the two officials, which focused on plans to boost Japan’s strategic investments in the United States through the US-Japan Trade and Investment Agreement.
They also shared perspectives on key aspects of the US-Japan economic partnership, including global security concerns and the significance of G7 commitments to apply economic pressure on Russia, according to official statements.
