Powerful Earthquake Hits Indonesian City
(MENAFN) A powerful tremor with a magnitude of 6.5 rocked the southeastern Indonesian city of Abepura on Thursday, according to the US Geological Survey.
The seismic event occurred approximately 120 miles away from Abepura, within Papua province, at around 05:48 GMT.
The quake’s focal depth was recorded at 21 miles beneath the surface.
However, the Indonesian geophysics agency, BMKG, reported a slightly higher magnitude, stating the quake measured 6.8 on the Richter scale.
As of now, there have been no immediate accounts of destruction or injuries in Abepura, a city inhabited by more than 60,000 residents.
