GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): A geotechnical survey of the Zardalo water dam that would cost three million afghanis has been launched in southern Ghazni province and will be completed within three months, officials said on Tuesday.

The storage dam is being planned in the Zardalo area of Qarabagh district, according to officials.

Governor spokesman Ezatullah Syedi told Pajhwok Afghan News the survey work - costing nearly three million afghanis - would be completed within three months.

He said once the survey was finalized, construction of the dam would begin at an estimated cost of 400 million afghanis.

According to him, the dam will be 41 meters deep and capable of storing up to 15 million cubic meters of water, which will help irrigate thousands of hectares of farmland.

He said the project was aimed at controlling surface water and supporting agricultural irrigation.

Mohammad Amin, a tribal elder from Zardalo, told Pajhwok he was happy about the dam's construction, saying that some residents had migrated due to drought, and the project would help reduce the effects of water shortages.

The completion of this project will help reduce the drought problem, he added.
