(MENAFN) At least four individuals were killed and 20 others wounded in an early Sunday morning shooting at a bar in Beaufort County, South Carolina, authorities confirmed.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office reported receiving multiple calls about the incident just before 1 a.m. local time (0500 GMT).

“At this time, we know that at least 20 people were injured. 4 were transported to area hospitals in critical condition, and four victims were pronounced deceased at the scene,” the sheriff’s office said in an official statement.

Hundreds of patrons were present at the bar when the shooting erupted, prompting victims and witnesses to flee to nearby businesses and properties for safety.

Emergency medical services transported several wounded victims to hospitals, while others sought medical help independently for injuries sustained during the attack.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement actively pursuing persons of interest connected to the case.
