Erdogan Set to Join Gaza Ceasefire Summit in Egypt
(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is set to travel to Egypt on Monday to participate in the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit, a high-stakes diplomatic gathering jointly convened by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and U.S. President Donald Trump, according to Türkiye's communications director Burhanettin Duran.
In a post shared Sunday on the U.S. social platform X, Duran stated: "Our President is scheduled to deliver a speech at the summit and to hold consultations with the leaders of the participating countries."
The summit, which aims to de-escalate the Gaza conflict and forge a path toward broader Middle East peace, is expected to host more than 20 global leaders. Alongside Erdogan, attendees will include French President Emmanuel Macron, Jordan's King Abdullah, Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Organizers said the summit’s core mission is “to end the war in the Gaza Strip, enhance efforts to bring peace and stability to the Middle East, and usher in a new phase of regional security and stability.”
Last Wednesday, Trump announced that Israel and Hamas had agreed to the first phase of his proposed 20-point ceasefire framework. The deal, now in effect, stipulates the release of all Israeli hostages in exchange for approximately 2,000 Palestinian detainees, coupled with a phased Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza.
The initiative’s second phase calls for establishing a new governing authority in Gaza that excludes Hamas, supported by a multinational peacekeeping force and the militant group’s full disarmament.
Since hostilities reignited in October 2023, Israeli military operations have resulted in the deaths of over 67,600 Palestinians in Gaza — the majority of whom are women and children — rendering vast portions of the territory unlivable.
