Denmark Boosts Defense with More F-35 Jets
(MENAFN) On Friday, Denmark revealed its intention to acquire 16 more F-35 fighter jets and make significant investments in its defense infrastructure in the Arctic and North Atlantic.
This initiative is part of a broader national security pact aimed at reinforcing military readiness in critical regions.
As reported by a media outlet, a total of 29 billion kroner (approximately $2.8 billion) will be directed toward the purchase of these additional aircraft, raising Denmark’s total number of F-35s to 43.
Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen referred to this development as a "historic strengthening" of the country's military forces.
Poulsen noted, "I visited the United States in July, where I discussed the possibility of quickly acquiring additional F-35 fighter aircraft with the head of the international F-35 fighter aircraft program."
His remarks underscored Denmark’s commitment to expediting the expansion of its air fleet.
Beyond expanding its air capabilities, Denmark is set to invest 27.4 billion kroner (around $2.7 billion) to bolster its defense footprint in the Arctic and North Atlantic.
This initiative was crafted through close cooperation with the administrations of Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
Key elements of the plan involve setting up a new Arctic Command headquarters in Nuuk, laying a submarine communications cable between Greenland and Denmark, and purchasing two more Arctic ships, surveillance drones, and aircraft for maritime patrols.
Chief of Defense Michael Hyldgaard emphasized, "The task of the Danish Armed Forces is to ensure security throughout the Kingdom. And if necessary, to defend Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Denmark within the framework of NATO in all domains."
His statement reinforced the strategic importance of safeguarding all parts of the Danish realm under NATO commitments.
