(MENAFN) A strong earthquake registering 7.8 magnitude struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, according to the National Seismological Center of the University of Chile. Tremors were widely felt in the surrounding regions, raising immediate concern among local authorities.

Chilean officials have confirmed that, so far, there are no reports of casualties or material damage linked to the seismic event.

In response to the quake, the Chilean Navy’s Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service issued a state of caution for the Antarctic territory, signaling potential risks to maritime and research operations in the area.

The event’s magnitude varies according to different agencies. The GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences initially recorded the quake at magnitude 6.9, pinpointing its epicenter at 60.13 degrees south latitude and 61.80 degrees west longitude, with a depth of 10 kilometers.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude of 7.6 and a depth of 10.5 kilometers.
