(MENAFN- Live Mint) Multiple people were reported dead or missing after a massive explosion rocked a US explosives factory Friday, sending emergency responders rushing to the site in Tennessee and prompting official warnings for the public to avoid the area, authorities said.

The explosion, which as per AP, rattled homes miles away, occurred at the facility of Accurate Energetic Systems in the Bucksnort area near the Hickman County/Humphreys County line.

Emergency responders could not go in because there continue to be explosions, Hickman County Advanced EMT David Stewart told The Associated Press by telephone.

The explosion has been confirmed by the Hickman County Sheriff's Office, which said in a post on Facebook, "We can confirm there has been an explosion at Accurate Energetic Systems in the Bucksnort area. Emergency services are currently on the scene working to address the situation."

It further added, "Please avoid the area to allow emergency responders to do their work. If you are in the area, stay clear and follow the instructions from local authorities.

For your safety and to assist responders, please minimize non-emergency calls to the Sheriff's Office and 911."

"We'll continue to provide updates as we receive more information. Stay safe, everyone," the message read.

Video from the scene showed burning debris field with smoke billowing into the air. WTVF-TV in Nashville broadcast images of debris strewn about the site, which also showed damaged vehicles in a parking lot. The news station said it received calls from people in the area who felt a large explosion.

Residents in Lobelville, more than a 20-minute drive from the manufacturer, said they felt their homes shake and some people captured the loud boom of the explosion on their home cameras.

Road closed

In the wake of the incident, the Tennessee Department of Transportation closed SR 230 (Tanyard Branch Road), which lies to the north of I-40 in the Bucksnort area.

Established in 1980, Accurate Energetic Systems, LLC“is dedicated to the development, manufacture, handling, and storage of high-quality energetic products utilized in both defense and commercial markets,” as per its website.
