U.S. Senate Votes Down GOP Stopgap Bill, Shutdown Persists

(MENAFN) The US Senate on Monday voted down a Republican-led stopgap funding measure passed by the House, leaving the government shutdown unresolved as it stretched into its sixth consecutive day.

By a 52-42 margin, the Senate failed to invoke cloture on the motion to advance the continuing resolution, effectively halting the effort to restore funding and reopen federal operations. The shutdown persists amid mounting pressure on lawmakers to reach a deal.

Among those backing the motion were Democrats Catherine Cortez Masto and John Fetterman, along with Independent Senator Angus King. Senator Rand Paul was the sole Republican opposing the resolution.

Earlier in the day, the Senate also turned away a competing Democratic proposal to extend government funding, with a 45-50 vote rejecting that alternative. The deadlock underscores the deep partisan divide as federal agencies remain unfunded and many government workers face continued uncertainty.
