Macron orders Ex-PM to hold final political talks

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron has tasked outgoing Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu with conducting final discussions with political parties to help restore stability in France, according to reports from the Elysee Palace.

The presidency announced on Monday that Macron instructed Lecornu—who tendered his resignation earlier in the day—to continue engaging with political groups and to deliver concrete proposals by Wednesday evening. The goal, it said, is to create “a platform for action and stability for the country.”

Lecornu confirmed on the social media platform X that he had “agreed to the request of the President of the Republic” to initiate talks with various political parties “for the stability of the country.”

“I will tell the head of state on Wednesday evening whether this is possible or not, so that he can draw all the necessary conclusions,” he added.

According to presidential sources cited by reports, Macron is prepared to “take responsibility” if Lecornu’s consultations fail to yield a workable outcome.

Lecornu took office after former Prime Minister François Bayrou lost a confidence vote in the National Assembly on September 8. Bayrou had presented a 2026 fiscal framework in July that aimed to cut nearly €44 billion (about $51 billion) from public spending to address France’s growing debt burden, which now stands at around 115% of GDP.

With one of the European Union’s highest budget deficits—estimated at 5.8% of GDP—France has faced ongoing political strain over fiscal policy. Disagreements over the 2025 budget last year triggered the downfall of the Michel Barnier government, following a rare alliance between left-wing and far-right lawmakers in support of a no-confidence motion.
