Japan’s former Economic Security Minister gets elected for head of LDP

(MENAFN) Japan’s former Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi has been elected head of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), setting her on track to become the country’s first female prime minister.

Saturday’s vote followed Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s decision earlier this month to step down in a bid to prevent a split within the party. Under Ishiba’s year-long leadership, the LDP lost its majority in both chambers of parliament.

Takaichi defeated Farm Minister Shinjiro Koizumi in a run-off after none of the five candidates secured a majority in the first round. She won with 159 votes, beating her rival by 29.

“I’m feeling how tough it’s going to be from here on, rather than feeling happy,” the 64-year-old said after her victory. “I will scrap my work-life balance and work, and work, and work, and work.”

Calling for unity within the party, she added that “we will not be able to rebuild the LDP if I do not get everyone’s help, from all generations.”

An extraordinary session of Japan’s parliament is expected in mid-October to formally elect the next prime minister. With the opposition unable to unite behind a single candidate, Takaichi is widely expected to assume the post.

Known for her admiration of the late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Takaichi has described the ‘Iron Lady’ as an inspiration for her combination of “strength of character and womanly warmth.”

A staunch conservative, Takaichi has long advocated a tougher stance on China and increased defense spending. She has also been critical of Russia over the Ukraine conflict, arguing that Moscow’s current leadership should not be treated as a partner in long-stalled peace treaty talks with Tokyo.
