(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, Oct 5 (KUNA) -- High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, Kaya Kallas, stressed Sunday on the importance of strengthening European-Gulf cooperation in confronting regional and international challenges, emphasizing the need to adopt to diplomatic solutions to achieve security and stability in the Middle East.
This came in a speech delivered by Kallas at the launch of the second high-level forum on regional security and cooperation between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the European Union, hosted by the State of Kuwait with the participation of foreign ministers and senior officials from both sides.
The forum precedes the 29th joint ministerial meeting scheduled for tomorrow.
The European official said that the common issues between the GCC and the European Union demonstrate convergence of interests and potential for future cooperation, adding, "the world needs more diplomacy and cooperation instead of confrontation, in order to enhance dialogue and understanding to achieve regional and international stability."
She stated that the discussions focused on diplomatic challenges and opportunities in the Middle East through three main issues: Iran, maritime security in the Red Sea, and the situation in Gaza.
She added that the UN Security Council's imposing of sanctions on Iran represents an important milestone, and that the European Union will re-impose previously lifted nuclear sanctions while emphasizing its continued commitment to the diplomatic track, as "a sustainable solution can only be achieved through negotiations, and the shared goal is to enable Iran to become a responsible partner in international affairs."
