For nearly three decades I have taught undergraduate and graduate level classes in physical geography, water resources management, water quality policy and management, wetlands, Florida springs, natural hazards, the human footprint on the landscape, and the geography of Florida. I began teaching at the University of South Florida in 2003, and I have directed USF's Florida Studies Program since 2011. In 2010, I led an effort (with two other scholars) to update Nelson M. Blake's classic 1980 book, Land into Water, Water into Land: a History of Water Management in Florida. In 2024, the University Press of Florida published my first solo-authored book, Florida Springs: From Geography to Politics and Restoration. This book won a gold medal from the Florida Book Awards for Florida non-fiction, and it won the American Association of Geographer's Globe Book Award for Public Understanding of Geography.
