Tucked away in the picturesque valleys of Bhaderwah in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district, a centuries-old tradition comes alive each year, the mystical Mela Patt, celebrated during the holy occasion of Naga Panchami. More than just a festival, it is a three-day journey into Bhaderwah's soul, where mythology, devotion, music, and community spirit merge into one unforgettable cultural spectacle.

A Royal Gift, A Sacred Legacy

The roots of Mela Patt stretch back to the 16th century, during the reign of Emperor Akbar. The Mughal emperor, intrigued by tales of Raja Nagpal of Bhaderwah, was deeply impressed by his spiritual aura. To honor him, Akbar sent a magnificent array of gifts, ornaments of gold and silver, silk fabrics, vessels, and musical instruments.

But these treasures were not meant for the king's court. Instead, they were offered to Nag Raj Vasuki, the revered serpent deity of Bhaderwah. This royal tribute marked the beginning of Mela Patt, embedding it forever in the region's cultural and spiritual heritage.

The Spirit of Mela Patt

The name itself-Patt, from the Sanskrit Patt Vastra (silken cloth), symbolizes the essence of offering and reverence. Over the years, the festival has grown into a vibrant confluence of faith and festivity, carrying unique traditions that continue to enchant both locals and visitors.

Unity in Diversity: Mela Patt is a festival without barriers. People of all backgrounds, castes, and communities come together, showcasing the region's inclusive spirit.

Offerings to Nag Raj Vasuki: Devotees present silk fabrics and symbolic items to seek blessings for fertility, protection, and prosperity.

Music and Dance: The valley resonates with the beats of traditional instruments, while folk dances handed down through generations fill the air with joy.
