Latin American Protesters Rally Over Interception of Sumud Flotilla
(MENAFN) Thousands of individuals took to the streets across various Latin American cities on Wednesday in response to the Israeli Navy’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla.
The flotilla, which set sail with the purpose of bypassing Israel’s blockade of Gaza and delivering crucial humanitarian supplies, has sparked outrage among supporters of the Palestinian cause.
Rallies unfolded in cities including Mexico City, Bogota, Buenos Aires, and Montevideo.
The demonstrations reflected widespread regional discontent with the maritime interception.
In Bogota, protesters assembled outside the National Business Association of Colombia (ANDI), a key organization representing the country's business sector.
The choice of location followed accusations posted by the Global Movement to Gaza on its X account, claiming the association has "direct ties to Israel's economic mission in Colombia."
In response, the group issued a formal denial of the allegation.
Meanwhile, in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, several hundred participants gathered, as reported by local media outlets.
Protesters condemned what they described as an "assault by the Israeli occupation forces" and called for an immediate halt to what they termed a genocide in Gaza.
“We are here today to demand the freedom of our comrades and the flotilla, and to ensure that humanitarian aid and food reach Gaza,” one demonstrator stated during the event.
A similar scene unfolded in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, where demonstrators expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Activists voiced support for Palestinian liberation and carried signs demanding the prosecution of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The flotilla in question included over 40 boats and was manned by more than 500 volunteers representing nearly 40 nations.
It was intercepted by the Israeli Navy roughly 80 nautical miles (about 148 kilometers) from the coast of Gaza.
