Trump’s government to pull funding from Council of Inspectors General
(MENAFN) The Trump administration has announced it will withdraw funding from the Council of Inspectors General, a federal oversight body that monitors government waste and misconduct, effective Wednesday, according to reports.
The council, officially called the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE), supports federal oversight staff by providing training, data analysis, and investigative resources. Removing its funding could significantly impair inspectors general, leaving them without essential shared infrastructure to detect fraud, abuse, and waste.
CIGIE, an independent organization within the executive branch, focuses on “integrity, economy, and effectiveness issues that transcend individual government agencies,” according to reports. Its website currently displays a notice stating: “Due to a lack of apportionment of funds, this website is currently unavailable.”
A White House Office of Management and Budget spokesperson told news outlets that some inspectors general had become “corrupt, partisan, and, in some cases, have lied to the public,” adding:
"The American people will no longer be funding this corruption."
Former CIGIE chair Mark Greenblatt warned that the funding cuts would leave inspectors “isolated” and “severely compromised,” while Mike Ware, former inspector general for the Small Business Administration, said the move would dismantle vital transparency platforms.
The decision has sparked rare bipartisan criticism. Republican Senators Chuck Grassley and Susan Collins wrote that the action could force CIGIE to furlough staff and halt oversight programs. They urged the administration to clarify its reasoning and reverse the decision by Friday:
"We urgently request an explanation for these actions and ask that you promptly reverse course," they said.
