Passport System Failure Triggers Delays at Key Airports in Canada
(MENAFN) A nationwide failure of Canada’s passport verification system led to significant disruptions at major airports on Sunday, resulting in extended delays and long queues for incoming international travelers, as reported by media.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), responsible for customs and border control, confirmed that the outage impacted the electronic passport inspection kiosks during "routine systems maintenance."
In a statement provided to media, CBSA spokesperson Luke Reimer attributed the disruption to an “unforeseen technical issue,” assuring that efforts were underway to restore the system “as quickly as possible.”
Airports such as Toronto Pearson International, Montreal Trudeau International, and Calgary International were hit hardest, with officials alerting passengers to expect delays. Vancouver International reported slower processing times but clarified that operations continued with only "slightly longer than normal" customs clearance.
This is not the first occurrence of such a nationwide system failure. Similar outages in April and June had previously caused widespread delays at customs across Canada.
