Two Students Killed And Three Wounded In Brazil School Shooting

(MENAFN- The Rio Times) On September 25, two armed men on a motorcycle opened fire into the courtyard of Escola Estadual Professor Luís Felipe in Sobral, Ceará. They killed two 17-year-old students and wounded three classmates during recess. Witnesses reported eight shots.

Officials found drug packaging and a precision scale at the scene. They now suspect gang rivalries drove the attack into a school's parking and play areas. Governor Elmano de Freitas sent top security teams and stepped up patrols.

Sobral built its reputation by boosting literacy from 48 percent in 2000 to 92 percent in 2020 through fast assessments, strong leadership, and community outreach.

Yet in 2024, Ceará recorded 3,272 homicides-an 11 percent rise from 2023-pushing violence into public spaces once thought safe. Beyond the immediate horror, this shooting exposes how organized crime has pierced even Brazil's education success stories.

Schools must pair security protocols with mental-health support. Policymakers should tackle youth recruitment into drug networks and enforce stricter school-zone protections.
