Venezuela gets shaken with 6.1 magnitude earthquake

(MENAFN) The quake caused panic among residents in both countries, but no casualties or significant damage have been reported so far in the affected Venezuelan areas.

In Colombia, the tremors were felt in cities such as Cúcuta and Bucaramanga, as well as in Caribbean coastal regions near the epicenter, including La Guajira.

Colombia’s National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) reassured the public that there is no tsunami risk. The agency noted that, based on information from the General Maritime Directorate (Dimar), “there is no tsunami threat for the Caribbean coast of Colombia” following the quake.

Authorities in both Venezuela and Colombia continue to monitor the situation to ensure no further impacts occur. The Colombian Geological Service noted that the neighboring country has experienced multiple seismic events in recent hours.

Seismic activity is common in the border region between Colombia and Venezuela due to tectonic movements, primarily from the interaction of the Caribbean and South American plates. This earthquake is among the strongest tremors recorded in the area so far this year.
