Canadian Report Criticizes TikTok
(MENAFN) A Canadian inquiry has determined that TikTok, a social media platform with hundreds of thousands of underage users in the country, failed to properly enforce age restrictions and gathered significant amounts of sensitive personal data from children.
The Canadian government released its report on Tuesday, at a time when discussions continue in the US regarding whether the app should be sold or banned due to concerns over data security.
The analysis examined the company’s methods of collecting and utilizing personal information to provide personalized content and advertising, assessing whether these practices complied with Canadian privacy regulations.
The report highlighted that hundreds of thousands of Canadian minors use the platform and emphasized TikTok’s insufficient efforts to implement provincial prohibitions restricting access for children under 13.
“As a result of TikTok’s inadequate age assurance measures, the company collected the personal information of a large number of Canadian children, including information that the offices consider to be sensitive,” the report stated.
Additionally, the report disclosed that TikTok gathers biometric data, including facial and voice information.
Although roughly 500,000 underage users are blocked annually, weaknesses in age-verification systems mean many children remain undetected.
