UN Chief: Two-State Solution Only Viable Path To Middle East Peace
(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency)
Amman, Sept. 23 (Petra) – United Nations Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres on Tuesday stressed that "the only viable solution to achieve peace in the Middle East is the two-state solution," emphasizing that nothing justifies collective punishment of the Palestinian people or the systematic destruction of their livelihoods.
Speaking before the UN General Assembly, Guterres said the world, 80 years after the UN's founding, faces the same challenges encountered by its founders, noting that the organization's principles are under siege and the pillars of peace and progress are collapsing.
He warned that "the world will suffer chaos without effective multilateral institutions" and called for reaffirming "the imperative of international law," stressing that "what is being debated at the General Assembly is a matter of life and death for millions."
Guterres also criticized countries acting as if legal rules do not apply to them, stating that "impunity is the root of chaos," and highlighted that the horrors in Gaza are approaching their third year, with the scale of death and destruction surpassing any other conflict, and famine declared despite measures by the International Court of Justice, which must be enforced immediately.
