Al-Aghwar, Sept. 23 (Petra) – Minister of Agriculture Saeb Khraisat said that Jordan's date palm plantations now cover more than 50,000 dunums, with nearly one million trees.
Khraisat made the remarks while sponsoring a celebration at the Agricultural Engineers Association station in Al-Karama, Jordan Valley, marking the Date Harvest Day organized by the Jordan Dates Association.
The event was attended by FAO representative Nabil Assaf, Secretary-General of the Jordan Valley Authority Hesham Al-Hesa, Deputy Head of the Agricultural Engineers Association Shadi Al-Qaisi, and President pf the Jordan Dates Association Anwar Haddad.
Khraisat predicted that Jordan's date production could exceed 50,000 tons in the coming years, with a value surpassing JD150 million, while exports are estimated at over $60 million annually. He stressed the ministry's ongoing support for the sector in cooperation with all partners.
He noted that the Jordanian date industry provides more than 11,000 jobs, most of them for women working in date processing facilities that employ the latest global technologies in packaging and marketing, making the sector a key economic driver for the national economy and agriculture.
This year, Jordan is expected to produce around 36,000 tons of premium date varieties, including the globally renowned Medjool dates, along with Barhi and other varieties.
The celebration included a special exhibition showcasing this season's date harvest, which is increasingly in demand internationally due to its quality and distinctiveness.
Several individuals supporting the Jordanian date sector were honored for their efforts in promoting this national product, which has gained a prominent position in global markets.
