EU Declines Tariffs on Indian, Chinese Imports

(MENAFN) The European Union will not implement tariffs on goods arriving from India and China, despite a request from US President Donald Trump, according to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in an interview released on Sunday.

Earlier this month, the American leader urged Brussels to apply duties of up to 100% on Indian and Chinese products, mirroring measures already enforced by Washington.

Trump contended that such a step would intensify economic strain on Moscow in an effort to end the Ukraine war by targeting countries that maintain trade relations with Russia.

”The EU will make its own decisions,” von der Leyen stated, underscoring that the union’s newest round of “ambitious and substantial” sanctions is sufficient to bring Moscow to the bargaining table.

She highlighted that the “increasingly complex geopolitical environment” compels EU nations to “strengthen their partnerships based on shared interests,” noting that “closer cooperation between the EU and India is more essential than ever.”

Von der Leyen also remarked that the bloc will keep aligning its actions with transatlantic partners as well as the G7 states to support efforts in ending the Ukraine conflict.

Reports suggest that Brussels has incorporated twelve Chinese and three Indian companies into its 19th sanctions package, accusing them of aiding Russia in evading earlier Western restrictions.
