NEW DELHI, Sept 19 (KUNA) -- India and Canada on Friday held discussions to reactivate bilateral dialogue mechanisms across sectors as bilateral ties showed signs of returning to normalcy.
The Indian External Affairs Ministry said in a statement that officials of the Ministry of External Affairs of India and Global Affairs Canada met in New Delhi for pre-Foreign Office Consultations.
The meeting comes as a follow-up to the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis in Canada on 17 June 2025.
"The discussions provided an opportunity to review the state of India-Canada bilateral relations and exchange views on other international and regional issues," the statement said.
Both sides reaffirmed the importance of India-Canada ties built on democratic values, respect for the rule of law, and commitment to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
They welcomed return of High Commissioners to each other's capitals and overall progress achieved since June 2025.
The two sides agreed to initiate necessary steps to reactivate bilateral dialogue mechanisms across diverse domains, including trade, defence, energy, civil nuclear, security and law enforcement, critical minerals, space, science and technology, and agriculture.
India-Canada ties deteriorated during former PM Justin Trudeau as he accused New Delhi of involving in the killing of a key Sikh separatist activist in Canadian land.
This triggered a major diplomatic tension as India accused Canada of supporting the Sikh separatist movement leading to the expulsion of High Commissioners and other diplomats from each other's capital. (end)
