Tajikistan, Switzerland, Qatar, Azizi Deliver Aid To Quake-Hit Afghans
KABUL (Pajhwok): As national and international aid continues to pour in, Tajikistan, Switzerland and the Azizi Charity Foundation have sent humanitarian assistance, while Qatar has established a temporary field hospital to provide urgent medical services to those affected by the earthquake in eastern Afghanistan.
Tajikistan has dispatched more than 3,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the earthquake-hit people in Afghanistan.
Following instructions from President Emomali Rahmon, the aid was sent to assist those affected by the recent powerful earthquake, Trend reported.
The aid, transported by a convoy of trucks, includes 24 types of essential goods and materials such as flour, oil, sugar, rice, bedding, clothing and shoes for children, adolescents, and adults, tents and construction materials including rebar, boards, roofing sheets, cement, and other items. The total shipment exceeds 3,000 tonnes.
This initiative reflects the compassion of the Tajik people towards their Afghan neighbours and highlights Tajikistan's humanitarian and neighbourly policy.
Meanwhile, the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) said that the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) has delivered 20 tonnes of non-food humanitarian assistance to meet the basic needs of earthquake victims in Kunar.
In a statement, the ARCS noted that the aid was formally handed over at Kabul International Airport to Mohammad Saleh Akhundzada, Director of Disaster Management at the ARCS, by Pamela Stathakis, Deputy Head of SDC in Kabul and Advisor Ahmad Saleem.
Akhundzada expressed deep appreciation for SDC's humanitarian support and emphasised that the assistance would be distributed transparently to the earthquake-affected communities in Kunar.
In her remarks, Stathakis highlighted SDC's commitment to addressing the needs of those impacted by natural disasters in Afghanistan.
She also pledged to provide further assistance to support the relief and well-being of the earthquake-affected communities in Kunar. The shipment includes 310 tents and 300 packages of winter clothing, which will soon be delivered to affected households in the province.
Azizi Bank also posted on its Facebook page that the Azizi Charity Foundation's aid convoy has reached Mazar Dara village in Nurgal district of Kunar province.
It said the aid includes cash assistance, flour, oil, rice, blankets, carpets, and clothing for children.
Meanwhile, according to a Qatari media report by QNA, the Qatar International Search and Rescue Group, part of the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya), has set up a temporary field hospital to provide urgent medical support to those affected by the earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan.
The group reported that the hospital has already admitted several injured individuals and provided them with necessary care, while critical cases have been transferred to main hospitals in neighbouring provinces.
In addition, the Qatar International Search and Rescue Group has established several shelter tents to provide temporary accommodation for families affected by the earthquake and to ensure their basic needs are met.
The earthquake, which struck shortly before Sunday night, affected Kunar, Nangarhar, Laghman, Panjshir, and Nuristan provinces, causing the most casualties and damage in Kunar.
According to official figures, the death toll in Kunar has reached 2,205, with 3,640 injured.
