Trump inks order to rename Department of Defense to ‘Department of War’
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday officially renaming the Department of Defense as the “Department of War.” The change is part of Trump’s effort to project global strength and eliminate what he calls “woke ideology” from the military.
Originally established as the Department of War in 1789, it was renamed the Department of Defense in 1947 by President Harry Truman. Trump’s order states that the new name signals the US’s readiness “to fight and win wars on behalf of our Nation at a moment’s notice.”
Trump also authorized Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to carry the additional title of “Secretary of War,” and the Pentagon’s website now operates under war.gov. Pentagon spokeswoman Kingsley Wilson praised the move, saying it emphasizes the need not just for defense, but for decisive military action.
