Boat Collision off Türkiye Leaves Five Migrants Dead, One Missing

(MENAFN) At least five undocumented migrants have died, one is missing, and another is critically injured after their boat collided with a Coast Guard vessel off the coast of Türkiye's northwestern Balikesir province on Sunday, local authorities reported.

The Balikesir Governor's Office confirmed that the incident occurred during a Coast Guard operation conducted by the Northern Aegean Group Command, part of the ongoing efforts to curb irregular migration.

According to the statement, a high-speed fiberglass boat carrying a migrant smuggler and 34 undocumented migrants collided with a Coast Guard vessel near the resort town of Ayvalik. The crash resulted in five migrants being thrown into the sea and killed, while one migrant remains missing. Another individual is reported to be in critical condition.

The Aegean Sea remains a key route for migrants attempting to reach Europe through Türkiye, often in perilous conditions.
