Taiwanese President Praises Trump Administration’s Support
(MENAFN) Taiwanese President William Lai Ching-te emphasized that the Trump administration has “strengthened” its support for the island and “not stopped or reduced” its engagement.
"There is a consensus among the international community that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are necessary for global security and prosperity, and it has been mentioned by the US president, Japanese prime minister and G7 leaders,” Lai noted during an interview with a news outlet.
His remarks followed reports that US officials held discussions with Taiwanese representatives prior to China staging its largest military parade last week, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the conclusion of World War II and Japan’s surrender in 1945.
Previous accounts had suggested that the Trump administration rejected Lai’s request for a stopover in New York while en route to Central America, where Taiwan still maintains ties with a handful of its 12 formal diplomatic partners.
During his initial term, Trump authorized weapons sales to Taiwan totaling $18.3 billion. By contrast, the amount declined to $8.4 billion under former US President Joe Biden.
Labeling China’s "expansion" a "threat" to global stability, Lai asserted that Beijing “wants to replace the rules-based" world order overseen by the US.
He pointed to China’s creation of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the launch of the Belt and Road Initiative, and efforts to internationalize the yuan, "because it wants to replace the democratic rules-based international order in every aspect,” Lai claimed.
