Ensure No Unsafe Meat Enters J&K: HC To Govt

Srinagar- The High Court of J&K and Ladakh on Thursday directed authorities to ensure that no unsafe meat is allowed to enter or be sold within Jammu and Kashmir.

Hearing a Public Interest Litigation, a Division Bench of Chief Justice Arun Palli and Justice Rajnesh Oswal also impleaded Commissioner Secretary, Animal Husbandry, Commissioner Secretary, Housing and Urban Development Department, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu as respondents to the petition filed by a practicing advocate Mir Umar.

The Bench expressed displeasure as Commissioners of Municipal Corporations of Srinagar and Jammu are yet to file their replies to the PIL.

The bench also asked newly impleaded respondents-the IGsP of Jammu and Kashmir as well as the Commissioner, Food Safety- to ensure that no unsafe meat was allowed to enter or be sold within the UT of Jammu and Kashmir. The case has been listed for the next hearing on September 10.

The court also took not of a news report regarding Seizure of 21 quintal of synthetic cheese and expired oil and directed the concerned authorities to file reply to same.
