Silent Sentinels: Ecuador Deploys Indigenous Drones To Shut Down Smugglers
(MENAFN- The Rio Times) Ecuador's Ministry of Defense launched the homegrown Rayo Justiciero drone squadron to strengthen its anti-narcotics campaign.
Designed and built at the Air Force's Aerospace Research Center in Ambato, these UAVs patrol dense jungles and rugged mountains to pinpoint hidden airstrips and illegal mining sites.
Equipped with night-vision and infrared sensors, each drone transmits live imagery to the joint military–police Security Bloc. Real-time data lets ground teams plan precise operations, minimize civilian risk, and respond swiftly to organized criminal activity.
Since January 2025, Ecuador's drones completed over 1,120 missions across Manabí, Guayas, Esmeraldas, and Tungurahua provinces. The addition of Rayo Justiciero extends flight endurance and broadens coverage, sealing off routes traffickers once exploited.
President Daniel Noboa declared an internal armed conflict on January 9, 2024, classifying narco-groups as terrorists. Under this mandate, security forces seized 105 metric tons of mostly cocaine by July 2025.
Those figures rank among the largest drug hauls in recent Ecuadorian history. By manufacturing the drones domestically, Ecuador cut procurement costs and ended reliance on foreign suppliers.
Each mission now costs a fraction of a manned patrol flight. Local communities increasingly tip off authorities, and drones confirm their reports from above, tightening the noose around criminal networks.
Analysts see Rayo Justiciero as a blueprint for other nations facing similar threats. The program proves that targeted investment in domestic research and real-time intelligence can sharpen tactical responses, improve public safety, and uphold national sovereignty.
