Over 60 Dead As Overcrowded Boat Capsizes In Niger State, Nigeria

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) At least 60 people died after an overcrowded boat capsized in Niger State, Nigeria, highlighting persistent safety failures in the country's inland waterways.

A major tragedy struck northern Nigeria after an overcrowded passenger boat capsized in Niger State, leaving at least 60 people dead and dozens more missing.

The ill-fated vessel, carrying more than 100 passengers, departed from Tungan Sulle village two days ago en route to Doga for a funeral ceremony. Midway through the journey, it sank in the river under unclear circumstances.

Authorities confirmed that only 13 bodies have so far been recovered, while rescue operations involving local divers and emergency teams continue. Officials warned that the death toll is expected to rise as more passengers remain unaccounted for.

Boat accidents are tragically common in Nigeria, particularly during the rainy season, when swollen rivers, overcrowding, and poorly maintained vessels increase risks. Many operators disregard passenger limits and safety regulations, leaving communities vulnerable to repeated disasters.

In recent years, similar incidents on Nigeria's inland waterways have claimed dozens of lives, underscoring persistent gaps in transport safety and regulation enforcement.

Local leaders have appealed to the federal government for urgent intervention, calling for stricter safety checks, provision of life jackets, and stronger oversight of water transport operators.

International humanitarian groups have also stressed the need for Nigeria to strengthen its disaster response and invest in safer river transport infrastructure to prevent future tragedies.
