First Made-In-India Semiconductor Chip To Be Used In Iot, RFID & Sensors Systems
The chips were presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi by Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during the Semicon India 2025 conference in New Delhi. This development is being hailed as the country's first“Made-in-India” semiconductor chip initiative.
Two of the chips were created by the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela. The first, called the Present Encryption Core (C2S0017), is a lightweight encryption block designed for resource-constrained devices.
It is expected to be used in Internet of Things (IoT), RFID systems, sensor networks, e-payments, and healthcare applications. The second, the VG Amplifier and Sensor Circuit (C2S0018), features capacitive interfacing and accelerometer functionality. It has potential use in biomedical systems, energy harvesting, and smart IoT nodes.
The third chip was developed by Parala Maharaja Engineering College (PMEC), Berhampur. Known as the High-Performance Multiplier IC (C2S0061), it is tailored for hardware-based face recognition systems, with applications in criminal tracking.
The design makes use of FPGA and ASIC technologies, showcasing Odisha's growing expertise in advanced semiconductor innovation.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi congratulated the institutions for their achievement, calling it a matter of immense pride for the state and a reflection of the talent nurtured in its academic ecosystem.
Researchers at NIT Rourkela, led by co-principal investigator Ayas Kanta Swain, said the recognition inspires them to continue contributing to India's Atmanirbhar Bharat mission.
PMEC principal Chitta Ranjan Mohanty echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the pride of being part of this first-of-its-kind national initiative.
The chip development projects began in 2023 with funding from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. With these breakthroughs, India has taken a crucial step towards building a self-reliant semiconductor ecosystem, strengthening its position in the global technology landscape.
