Death Toll From Earthquake In Kunar Further Rises

KABUL (Pajhwok): Rescue operations continued in the earthquake-hit areas on Wednesday; with the death toll in eastern Kunar province reaching 1,457.

The powerful Monday night's earthquake also left 3,394 injured and destroyed 6,782 homes, the deputy spokesman for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan said.

The earthquake, measured at 6.0 on the US Geological Survey's Richter scale, caused the most damage in Kunar followed by Nangarhar, Laghman, Panjshir and Nuristan.

The highest number of deaths and injuries occurred in Kunar province.

A day earlier, officials put the total number of martyrs and injured in the earthquake in Kunar at 1,411 and 3,124, while the number of destroyed homes at 5,412.

However, Hamdullah Fitrat, the deputy spokesman for the Islamic Emirate, wrote on his X-Page today:“So far, the number of martyrs has reached 1,457 and the number of injured 3,394, and the number of houses destroyed in the mentioned areas has reached 6,782.”

He added:“Rescue teams have been working all day to pull out the remaining people trapped under the rubble and transfer the injured. The injured have been transferred to hospitals by helicopters.”

He added that most of the affected areas have been covered, and roads that were closed to the earthquake areas have been opened for movement and access has been restored.

According to Fitrat, professional rescue teams have been sent from some countries to participate in the rescue operations, and all government agencies are trying to help the victims in cooperation with the people.
