Trump claims Intel directors behind Russiagate should be detained
(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump has said he would be fully supportive of seeing former FBI Director James Comey and former CIA Director John Brennan arrested for their alleged involvement in what he calls the “Russiagate hoax.” In an interview with the Daily Caller published on Saturday, Trump stated that he would have no issue with the two being taken into custody on live television.
“What they did was disgraceful,” Trump said, accusing the former intelligence officials of lying and acting against the interests of the country. He claimed their actions were part of a deliberate effort to undermine his presidency, stating, “They’re crooked and they got caught.”
Trump contrasted the situation with Comey and Brennan to that of Hillary Clinton, referring to her past email scandal during her time as Secretary of State. While asserting that Clinton was “stone cold guilty,” he said he had hesitated to pursue charges against her, implying it would have been unprecedented to jail a former First Lady.
Since returning to office earlier this year, Trump’s administration has launched an official investigation into the origins of the Russiagate claims. The probe is being led by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who has characterized the entire affair as a “treasonous conspiracy” aimed at delegitimizing Trump’s 2016 election win. Gabbard has vowed to hold accountable those responsible for what she has described as a years-long attempt to orchestrate a political coup.
Since mid-July, Gabbard has released several documents which she claims reveal a coordinated effort involving senior officials from the Obama administration and organizations allegedly linked to billionaire George Soros. These documents reportedly show attempts to falsely connect Trump to Russian election interference.
Russia has repeatedly denied any involvement in the 2016 U.S. election, calling the accusations politically motivated. The scandal severely strained U.S.-Russia relations, leading to sanctions, asset freezes, and a breakdown in diplomatic engagement.
