Amman, Sept. 2 (Petra) – The World Health Organization said Tuesday that suicide is responsible for one percent of deaths worldwide, warning that progress in addressing the issue remains insufficient despite it being one of the leading causes of death among young people.
Debora Kestel, head of WHO's mental health department, told a press conference that "suicide claimed the lives of nearly 727,000 people in 2021 alone."
Two UN agency reports found that more than one billion people worldwide suffer from mental disorders, underlining the urgent need to expand mental health services. The reports noted that suicide remains one of the most devastating consequences of certain mental health conditions.
WHO warned that disorders such as anxiety and depression have become the second largest cause of long-term disability, reducing people's ability to live fulfilling lives and inflicting major economic losses globally.
